SUMMARY:Alex Da Corte: Ear Worm (A captivating mix of exhibitions that merge interdisciplinary art\, storytelling\, and social commentary)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your curiosity – this season promises a captivating mix of exhibitions that merge interdisciplinary art\, storytelling\, and social commentary. Awaiting visitors on MOCA’s second floor is a dreamlike environment envisioned by Venezuelan American artist Alex Da Corte. Vivid and surreal\, Da Corte’s art is culled from popular culture\, sexuality\, violence\, cinema\, children’s literature\, and art and design history\, lending his work a certain familiarity. Within his wild imagination\, however\, popular symbols are stretched\, shrunken\, and softened\, opening new ways of interpreting them and their cultural significance. \n  \nAwaiting visitors on Floor 2 is a dreamlike environment envisioned by Venezuelan American artist Alex Da Corte. Vivid and surreal\, Da Corte’s work draws from areas of popular culture\, sexuality\, violence\, cinema\, children’s literature\, and art and design history. His work feels familiar\, yet popular symbols are stretched\, shrunken\, and softened\, inviting us to see things we recognize in new ways and re-evaluate their cultural significance. \nMoving image works are often at the centre of Da Corte’s installations. Playing both director and leading actor in his sleekly executed films\, the artist morphs into his subjects\, fashioning himself into characters like Mister Rogers\, Sleeping Beauty\, Marcel Duchamp\, and the Wicked Witch of the West. By becoming the characters who taught us right from wrong or good from evil\, Da Corte challenges us to rethink the stories and protagonists we love or despise. \nFor MOCA\, Da Corte has reimagined his 2018 film Rubber Pencil Devil across several large-scale multicolor rear-projection cubes. This immersive work appears alongside the Mouse Museum (Van Gogh Ear)\, a newly realized work and intimate experience that invites viewers into Da Corte’s wildly creative mind. The interior of the structure is dark\, with an illuminated vitrine spanning the walls like a film strip. It’s “life as a moving image\,” Da Corte notes. \n  \nSchedule:\nEvery Wednesday\, 11:00 pm – 6:00 am\nEvery Thursday\, 11:00 pm – 6:00 am\nEvery Friday\, 11:00 pm – 6:00 am\nEvery Saturday\, 11:00 pm – 6:00 am\nEvery Sunday\, 11:00 pm – 6:00 am

SUMMARY:New Year's Eve Party- Hogman-Eh! 2024
DESCRIPTION:Hogmanay\, or Scottish New Year’s Eve\, has been celebrated since pagan times when the Norsemen marked the winter solstice and the beginning of a new year. Each year in Ottawa the Scottish Society of Ottawa (SSO) offers up our own “Hogman-Eh!” – you don’t need to be Scottish to participate\, you only need to like having a good time! \nHogman-Eh! is for families and people of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the close of the year with great music\, dance\, friendly people\, and delicious food and drink. \nThis year the event will be at a new location – the Infinity Centre\, on Gibford Drive. As one of Ottawa’s newest meeting spaces\, it is elegant and spacious with a large welcoming foyer. The centre is served by four major bus routes and offers something we haven’t had in the past: lots of free parking in the area. There are also four hotels close by if you’d like to stay the night. This move was necessary\, as the Aberdeen Pavilion was unavailable this year. \nThe event begins at 2 pm with the opening of the Hall of Origins which is free for all. At 4:30 pm the main ballroom will open and many exciting musicians and bands will entertain you until 1 am. \nThis year get ready to sing along or dance to local tenor John Young\, Cape Breton fiddler Ernie Fraser\, The Royal Canadian Air Force pipe band\, Celtic favourites Brandy ‘N’ Port and our headliner act\, the internationally acclaimed The Devil’s Brigade \nThere will also be a chance to watch as dancers from several Ottawa Highland Dance schools demonstrate their impressive talents. \nAs no party can be without good food and drinks\, guests will be able to purchase a $25 voucher at the door that can be exchanged for a tasty meal prepared on-site by Dhruvees restaurant\, who have proudly served their Asian-style food at previous Hogman-Eh! events. VIP patrons will be provided a tasty menu from the centre’s on-site kitchen. \nMavericks Donuts will also be there to provide an array of gourmet donuts. \nThe Hogman-Eh! bar as always\, will serve premium scotch whisky\, Scottish beer\, soft drinks (Irn Bru of course)\, and a good selection of wines and other refreshments. \nWe’re set for a great extravaganza! Looking forward to seeing you at this “Infinitely” good time – Hogman-eh ’24! \nTicket prices are $45 for general admission (free for children under 12); $75 for a VIP ticket and $125 for a VIP ticket and a 2-course meal. Taxes and service charges will be added on at checkout.
