SUMMARY:Bright Signs: Spotlight on Video Art
DESCRIPTION:Reverberating with sound and light\, Bright Signs: Spotlight on Video Art brings together works by 11 leading contemporary artists. Spanning three decades\, this exhibition includes cinematic video installations and neon sculptures\, many of which have yet to be seen at the AGO. \nDrawn from the AGO’s collection of contemporary art\, the artworks on view address critical social issues\, including perceptions of history\, visibility and power. At the centre of the exhibition is Kahlil Joseph’s cinematic three-channel video installation Wild Cat (Aunt Janet) from 2016\, an homage to the founder of an African American rodeo that takes place every summer in Grayson (formerly Wildcat)\, Oklahoma and Theaster Gates’ Progress Palace (2017)\, an immersive installation that pays tribute to the Godfather of House Music\, Frankie Knuckles. Additional highlights include artist Sarah Sze’s sculpture Disappearing Act (2020) and Lisa Reihana’s ever popular installation in Pursuit of Venus [infected](2020). \nCurated by Debbie Johnsen\, AGO\, Manager\, Modern and Contemporary Collections\, this exhibition features artworks that will form the cornerstone for the expansion of the new Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery\, starting construction in 2024. \n  \nSchedule:\nEvery Tuesday\, 10:30 pm – 5:00 am\nEvery Wednesday\, 10:30 pm – 9:00 am\nEvery Thursday\, 10:30 pm – 5:00 am\nEvery Friday\, 10:30 pm – 9:00 am\nEvery Saturday\, 10:30 pm – 5:30 am\nEvery Sunday\, 10:30 pm – 5:30 am

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 36 years of fun! The Sun Life Waterloo Busker Carnival is a not-for-profit\, volunteer-driven carnival that has been entertaining families in the Waterloo Region since 1989. From acrobats to contortion\, comedy\, and fire breathers\, the carnival brings the best international artists in the world to UpTown Waterloo for four days. \n  \nBe prepared to laugh and be amazed. Take some time to stop at our vendors to enjoy some international foods and do some shopping. Take in some of your favorite shows\, try your hand at the midway games\, and don’t forget a ride on our famous Ferris wheel with amazing views. It’s fun for the whole family. \n  \nAdmission to the carnival is free. The artists make their living by the tips they receive. While they receive some travel assistance they are not paid by the carnival. After each show\, the artists will “pass the hat” for your tips and donations. If you enjoyed the show\, please contribute an amount that you can afford as a thank you. How much you tip is up to you.

DESCRIPTION:The City of Oshawa has been proud to be the host city of Autofest Nationals for 30 years. Recognizing this as one of our signature community events\, the City of Oshawa has made significant contributions to the growth and success of this annual car show with more than $270\,000 of in-kind support provided since 2014. \nAlthough we are disappointed to learn that Oshawa will not be home to Autofest in 2024\, we thank Motor City Car Club and wish them a successful 2024 event at this year’s location in the Durham Region. The City values its partnership with Motor City Car Club and they continue to be invited to participate in the City-led Kars on King annual event. \nKars on King returns Friday\, August 23\, 2024 and will bring with it enhanced entertainment as part of our 100th Anniversary line-up of signature events. More than 400 classic vehicles in various makes and models will line our downtown Oshawa streets along with live entertainment\, community attractions and a Family Zone with inflatables. This premier event – identified as part of our centennial year celebrations – attracts visitors\, car enthusiasts and classic car owners from across the GTA\, Ontario and beyond!
